The role of neuroticism in startle reactions to fearful and disgusting stimuli

چکیده
It has frequently been observed that negative moods potentiate the startle re ̄ex to unexpected, threatening stimuli. However, recent work from our laboratory suggests that this eect relates primarily to the emotion of fear or anxiety, while stimuli which evoke powerful feelings of disgust can in some circumstances inhibit the startle re ̄ex. In this study we reanalyse data from 42 subjects in whom eyeblink amplitudes to an auditory probe were measured whilst viewing emotionally arousing ®lm clips. Classifying the negative ®lm clips into separate categories of ``frightening'' vs ``disgusting'' revealed a previously undetected interaction with EPQ Neuroticism. High N subjects showed greater startle reactions than low N subjects under fearful conditions but low N subjects showed greater startle when disgust was evoked. This suggests that Neuroticism may increase vigilance where evasive action is possible but promote emotional blunting when escape is not an option. 7 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Decomposing unpleasantness: differential exogenous attention to disgusting and fearful stimuli.
Negative stimuli have consistently been shown to efficiently attract exogenous attention. Two different types of unpleasant stimuli, disgusting and fearful, sharing similar arousal and valence, are usually employed as a single category. However, since they diverge in several important aspects (biological functionality, associated feelings, and central and peripheral physiological correlates), i...
متن کاملThe Divergent Effects of Fear and Disgust on Inhibitory Control: An ERP Study
Negative emotional stimuli have been shown to attract attention and impair executive control. However, two different types of unpleasant stimuli, fearful and disgusting, are often inappropriately treated as a single category in the literature on inhibitory control. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the divergent effects of fearful and disgusting distracters on inhibitory control...
متن کاملAnteromedial temporal lobe damage blocks startle modulation by fear and disgust.
The acoustic startle reflex (ASR) is potentiated during negative emotion, but attenuated during positive emotional experience. The modulation of the ASR by fear depends critically on the amygdala. The authors investigated ASR modulation to fearful, disgusting, pleasant, and neutral stimuli in 12 patients with unilateral damage to the anteromedial temporal lobe including the amygdala (6 left, 6 ...

Objective : the studies indicate that the "eye-blink" components of "acoustic startle reflex" can be modulated through emotionally slide stimuli. Pleasant stimulants reduce eye-blink amplitude, whereas unpleasant stimulants enhance them. Method: the present study examines the modulation of the acoustic startle reflexes through a short film clips (2-min), classified as pleasant, unpleasant and...
